    At the exhibition 'Yalla Yalla! See You in Egypt', Teylers Museum puts the work of the nineteenth-century artist Willem de Famars Testas centre stage in a whole new way. The oldest museum in the Netherlands has plotted a journey in the exhibition with Testas’s work as its guide, they take visitors along on a journey across the boundaries of time, space and cultures.

    Céline Burnand and the dancers sought to revive the invisible bodies of history, by replacing them within emblematic architectures of the colonial project in ruins and evoking the failure of such enterprises, or the damage they caused, not only to the local populations but also to nature and intangible heritage (indigenous and ancestral knowledge).

    The installation follows Tamer El Said as he appropriates another family's footage to reclaim a memory of a lost sibling. It invites visitors to look for their own recollections in the same footage, creating an act of collective remembrance.

    Smell of Cement transforms the grueling, rhythmic labor of construction workers into a hypnotic choreography, revealing the fragile bodies, emotional burdens, and dance-like precision hidden within life on the scaffolding.

    Premiere: Festival de Marseille, Marseille, France 2021

    The filmmaker Tamer El Said and the musician and sound artist Youssra el Hawary present the work carried out during a month and a half residency in Marseille. A collective audiovisual project in progress which, through a dialogue between images and sounds, explores the questions, reflections and observations of two artists in love, each confined to a city due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

    A young woman and her friends join a car repair shop as «Belia» (colloquial Egyptian for apprentices) to learn the craft from the Ustas (craft headmasters). They explore what this relationship creates as it merges labor with everyday life rhythms to open up a new space for movement.

    As You Lay in Your Grave was released by the Wexner Center for the Art at Ohio State University in October 2020 as part of the project Cinetracts’ 20. The project invited 20 filmmakers from around the world, including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Gabriel Mascaro, and others, to make 20 short films in response to the current socio-political zeitgeist.

    The live version of Nozhet El Nofous, Nancy Mounir's album. where she combines Mounir's own arrangements and the sounds of archival recordings of Egyptian singers from the turn of the 20th century.

    Youssra El Hawary is touring across the U.S. as part of Center Stage. For its fourth edition, Center Stage – a cultural exchange program initiated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and produced by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) – will bring five contemporary music and theater ensembles from Egypt and Ukraine to tour in the United States in September-November 2018. During independent month-long tours Dina Elwedidi (Egypt), Kurbasy (Ukraine), Mohamed Abozekry and Karkadé (Egypt), Teatr-Pralnia with CCA Dakh (Ukraine), and Youssra El Hawary (Egypt) will present more than 50 performances and hundreds of residency activities, classroom visits, workshops, artist-to-artist exchange, and community gatherings.

  • Since 2010, Youssra has been composing her own songs, a satirical mix of social and political commentary, In the early stages of her career, she would take to the stage only with her accordion, her lively presence and unique musical style soon had her garnering a loyal following. It was in the same year that Youssra decided to start working with other musicians, and a band was finally formed. Ever since then, the band has been reinventing Youssra’s older songs and creating new music, as well as performing in concerts and festivals both in Egypt and abroad.
